Truck Speed Limiter Cost in Latin America: What Drives the Price
Truck Speed Limiter Cost in Latin America: What Drives the Price
Searching for limitador de velocidad precio or precio limitador de velocidad para camiones turns up a wide spread of answers, and that is no accident. A speed limiter is not one product with one price. The cost of getting a truck limited depends on the type of unit, the truck it goes on, who fits it and how many vehicles you are doing.
The right price depends on your trucks, so this guide shows what moves the cost up and down, so you can compare quotes sensibly and work out the payback for your own fleet. If you run a gobernador de velocidad programme in Mexico or a limitador de velocidad programme anywhere else in the region, the same logic applies.
The four things that decide the cost
1. The type of unit
Different trucks need different limiters, and they are not interchangeable.
| Vehicle or need | Unit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic throttle (drive-by-wire) | DBW speed limiter | Electronic, works on the throttle signal |
| Older mechanically governed diesel | System 80 | Mechanical, works on the fuel line |
| Limiter plus tracking and proof of speed | TrackSpeed | Limiter combined with ScorpionTrack GNSS tracking |
| Different limits in different zones | GeoKontrol | GPS geofenced zone speed limits |
| Vehicles using the SENT sensor protocol | SENT speed limiter | For SENT throttle sensors |
The first decision is the truck, not the budget. If the truck has an electronic throttle, a mechanical unit has nothing to act on; if it is an older mechanical diesel, an electronic unit has nothing to connect to. Once you know which family your truck belongs to, the choice of unit is mostly made for you, and the more capable units, such as those with tracking or geofencing, naturally cost more than a basic limiter because they do more.
2. How long the fit takes
Fitting labour is the part of the cost you control most directly, and it varies by unit.
- DBW: about 1.5 hours.
- System 80: about 60 minutes.
- TrackSpeed: about 60 minutes.
Those are fit times, so the labour element is short in every case. A truck is off the road for a fraction of a working day, not days. Plan the work for a scheduled service or a loading gap and the downtime is close to nothing.
3. Who fits it
This is where our model differs from what you may be used to. We ship direct to your fleet with fitting instructions. You then choose how it is fitted:
- Your own workshop team. If you already have mechanics or auto-electricians on the payroll, the labour cost is time you have already paid for. For a fleet of any size this is usually the lowest-cost route.
- A local auto-electrician or workshop. If you do not have in-house capacity, any competent workshop can do the job with our instructions. You agree the labour rate locally, with someone who can come to your depot.
Because you choose, you are not tied to a single installer’s rates, and you can compare local quotes. Our technical team supports whoever is doing the work, remotely. For more on how this works day to day, see fit a speed limiter yourself or with a local installer.
4. The size of the order
A quote for one truck and a quote for a fleet are different conversations. Larger orders let us plan a proper programme, mixing unit types across vehicle classes, and give your workshop a repeatable routine. If you run mixed trucks, say a few older mechanical diesels alongside newer electronic ones, send us the whole list and we will match each vehicle to the right unit in one quote.
What a limiter costs you, and what it gives back
The cost of a limiter should not be read in isolation. The better question is how fast it pays for itself, and fuel is where most fleets see the answer.
Diesel consumption rises sharply at higher speeds. Capping a truck’s top speed removes the highest-consumption running, which is exactly the running a driver chooses when nobody is checking. Over thousands of kilometres a month on long Latin American routes, that adds up.
The real figure depends on your routes, loads, terrain and current driving habits, so put your own numbers into the calculators:
- The speed limiter ROI calculator compares what the limiter costs you with what the fuel saving returns.
- The fleet fuel savings calculator estimates the saving across a whole fleet.
- Our fuel savings from speed limiters guide explains where the saving comes from.
Fuel is not the only return. Lower peak speeds mean less heat and wear in tyres and brakes. A sealed limiter with tamper evidence gives you something to show an insurer. Client and site rules, in mining, ports, oil and gas and construction, increasingly specify how contractor vehicles must be speed-controlled, and a limiter turns that from a promise into something you can demonstrate. Some of these returns are hard to price in advance, but they are real, and they improve the case.
Cost traps to avoid
A few things catch fleets out when they compare limiter quotes.
Comparing different things. A quote for an electronic limiter and a quote for a mechanical one are not like for like. Check that each quote is for the right unit for your truck.
Ignoring the control question. An engine ECM speed setting can look like the cheap option, but anyone with the manufacturer’s service software can change it back. If the point is to protect your fuel bill, your tyres or your insurance position, a setting that a driver’s friend can undo is not the same as a sealed limiter. See tamper-detection and tamper-proof speed limiters.
Fitting a unit that does not match the truck. This is the expensive mistake, because it means a wasted unit and a second fit. Send us the details first.
Treating it as a one-off. If a vehicle’s use changes, or you move it to a different route, recalibration may be needed. See speed limiter recalibration.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a limitador de velocidad cost for a truck?
It depends on the unit, the truck and the size of the order, so we quote per fleet. Tell us the make, model, year and engine type of your trucks and how many you run, and we will quote for the right unit on each.
Is the fitting cost included?
Fitting is done by you, using your own workshop team or a local auto-electrician or workshop of your choice, so the labour cost is whatever you agree locally. We ship direct with fitting instructions and support you remotely.
How long does fitting take?
About 1.5 hours for a DBW, and about 60 minutes for System 80 and TrackSpeed.
Is a gobernador de velocidad cheaper than a limitador de velocidad?
They are the same thing. Gobernador de velocidad is the term common in Mexico, limitador de velocidad elsewhere. Cost depends on the unit type, not on the name.
How do I work out the payback?
Use the speed limiter ROI calculator and the fleet fuel savings calculator with your own fuel use, mileage and fleet size.
