Limitador de Velocidad Ecuador: Speed Limiters for Volquetas, Camiones and Buses

Ecuador packs a lot of road into a small country. Trucks climb from Guayaquil to the Sierra, buses run the Panamericana between Quito, Cuenca and the coast, and volquetas haul aggregates for construction and mining. The device that caps a vehicle’s road speed is called a limitador de velocidad. In English it is a speed limiter or speed governor.

AutoKontrol makes them in the UK. We are part of Scorpion Group, which has built vehicle electronics since 1973, and our units are ECE R89 type-approved. We ship direct to fleets in Ecuador with fitting instructions, and the fleet fits the unit with its own workshop team or a local auto-electrician. This page covers why fleets here fit a limitador de velocidad, which unit suits which vehicle, and how supply works.

Why Ecuadorian fleets fit a limitador de velocidad

Mountain roads punish fast driving. A loaded camión or volqueta coming down from the Andes needs room to stop, and the driver’s right foot is the only thing deciding how much room that is. A limiter takes that decision out of the pedal.

Diesel per kilometre. “Consumo de diésel por km de una volqueta” is the kind of question operators ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on load, grade and speed. Speed is the part you can control. Run the numbers for your own trucks in the HGV fuel consumption calculator.

Accident exposure. Heavy vehicles carry a lot of momentum. Capping the top speed trims the worst outcomes on long descents, wet coastal roads and night runs.

Insurance. A sealed limiter with tamper detection is something you can put in front of an insurer. A written policy that drivers may or may not follow is a weaker thing to show.

Client and site rules. Oil and gas operators, mines, ports and large construction clients set speed rules for the contractors who serve them. A fitted limiter, plus the speed record from TrackSpeed, gives you proof to show.

Driver behaviour. The cap holds whatever the pedal does. Your speed policy stops depending on who is driving that day.

Limitador de velocidad mecánico: the System 80

“Limitador de velocidad mecánico” is one of the phrases fleet managers in Ecuador search for, and it points at a real need. Plenty of working diesel trucks, volquetas and older buses in the region still use mechanical fuel control. They have no electronic throttle signal for an electronic limiter to read.

The System 80 is built for exactly those vehicles. It is a mechanical limiter that works on the fuel line, so it caps speed by controlling fuel delivery rather than by reading a sensor. Fitting takes about 60 minutes, and accuracy is within +/-1-2 km/h. It needs no drive-by-wire engine, which makes it the practical choice for older diesels that are still earning their keep.

The dividing line is how the engine controls fuel. An electronic pedal means the DBW. Mechanical fuel control means System 80. If you are unsure which your truck has, send us the make, model, year and engine and we will tell you.

Sectors where it makes most sense

  • Construction and aggregates. Volquetas on mixed road and quarry routes, often with many drivers on shared trucks. One cap for the whole fleet keeps behaviour consistent.
  • Oil and gas logistics. Tankers and support trucks into the Oriente, usually with site rules on top of the road rules. GeoKontrol applies a lower speed inside a site and releases it outside.
  • Mining. Haulage between pits, plants and public roads. Zone speed limits suit the site side.
  • Intercity and school buses. Long mountain runs with passengers aboard. A limiter is a visible control for operators and a calm one for passengers.
  • Freight and distribution. Sierra to coast and port runs, where the fuel bill is the largest line after wages.

How supply and fitting work

We ship direct to your fleet with fitting instructions. Your own workshop team can fit the unit, or you can use a local auto-electrician or any workshop you trust. Our technical team supports you remotely through fitting, setup and calibration. A DBW takes about 1.5 hours, and System 80 or TrackSpeed about 60 minutes each.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a limitador de velocidad mecánico?

It is a speed limiter that works mechanically on the fuel line rather than electronically through a throttle sensor. Our System 80 is one. It suits older diesel vehicles with mechanical fuel control, takes about 60 minutes to fit and holds speed within +/-1-2 km/h.

Can it be fitted to a volqueta?

Yes. A volqueta with mechanical fuel control takes the System 80. One with an electronic throttle takes the DBW. Send us the make, model, year and engine and we will confirm the right unit.

Does it work on buses?

Yes. Buses with an electronic throttle suit the DBW, and older mechanical diesels suit System 80. TrackSpeed adds GNSS tracking where an operator wants a speed record as well as a cap.

Can our own workshop fit it?

Yes. We ship with fitting instructions, and your workshop or a local auto-electrician can fit it. We support remotely.

Does it help diesel consumption per km?

Speed has a strong effect on diesel use, and a limiter removes the highest-consumption running. The size of the gain depends on your load, route and current driving, so test your own figures in the fuel savings calculator.
