Limitador de Velocidad Argentina: Speed Limiters for Camiones, Colectivos and Micros
Argentina is one of the few countries in Latin America where speed limitation for heavy vehicles is written into national rules. The device that caps a vehicle’s road speed is called a limitador de velocidad. In English it is a speed limiter or speed governor. For camiones, colectivos and micros de larga distancia, the rules are Resolución 19/2016 and Disposición 500-E/2017.
AutoKontrol makes speed limiters in the UK. We are part of Scorpion Group, which has built vehicle electronics since 1973, and our units are ECE R89 type-approved. We ship direct to fleets in Argentina with fitting instructions, and the fleet fits the unit with its own workshop team or a local auto-electrician. This page sets out what the two rules say and how a limiter fits into a fleet’s plan.

Resolución 19/2016
Resolución 19/2016 of the Secretaría de Gestión de Transporte (Ministerio de Transporte, 26 May 2016) covers speed limitation of new and used passenger and cargo vehicles. The set speeds, each with a tolerance of plus or minus 3 percent, are:
| Vehicle | Set speed |
|---|---|
| M3, long-distance and interurban buses (micros de larga distancia) | 100 km/h |
| M3, urban buses (colectivos) | 60 km/h |
| M2, smaller passenger vehicles | 100 km/h |
| N2 and N3 trucks (camiones) | 90 km/h |
The limitation is done by reprogramming the on-board computer at manufacture or import. The resolution set deadlines of 180 days for M2 and M3 and 360 days for N2 and N3 from publication. Used M2, N2 and N3 units of model years 2015 to 2017 are to be recalibrated, while earlier models are exempt. The CNRT (Comisión Nacional de Regulación del Transporte) sets the procedure and can deactivate units that do not comply.
Disposición 500-E/2017
Disposición 500-E/2017 of the CNRT sets the procedure and schedule for used N2 trucks (3,500 to 12,000 kg) and N3 trucks (over 12,000 kg). New 0 km N2 and N3 vehicles after 1 June 2017 must have limiters fitted by their manufacturers. For used units, the route runs through the mandatory technical inspection (RTO): a unit that does not comply will not pass.

Where AutoKontrol fits for Argentine fleets
Factory programming covers the vehicle as built. Fleets still have questions the factory setting does not answer, and these are the conversations we have with operators:
- Older vehicles. Models built before 2015 sit outside the recalibration schedule. If you want a sealed limiter on a mechanical diesel, the System 80 works on the fuel line.
- A lower fleet setting. A fleet policy may sit below the set speed, for fuel or for site rules. A sealed limiter holds the figure you choose.
- Tamper detection and proof. A fitted, sealed unit with tamper detection gives you something to show insurers and clients. TrackSpeed adds GNSS tracking and a speed record.
- Zone limits. GeoKontrol applies a lower speed inside depots, plants, ports or mine sites and releases it outside.
Talk to us about your vehicles and we will say which unit suits each one. Send the make, model, year and engine.
Which limitador de velocidad fits your vehicles
| Your vehicle or need | Fits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Camión or colectivo with an electronic throttle | DBW speed limiter | Electronic, works on the drive-by-wire throttle signal. Fit about 1.5 hours. |
| Older diesel with mechanical fuel control | System 80 | Mechanical, works on the fuel line. Fit about 60 minutes. Accuracy +/-1-2 km/h. |
| Tracking plus a record of speed | TrackSpeed | Limiter with ScorpionTrack GNSS tracking. Fit about 60 minutes. |
| Lower speeds inside depots, plants, ports | GeoKontrol | GPS geofenced zone speed limits. |
| Vehicles using SENT throttle sensors | SENT speed limiter | Built for the SENT sensor protocol. |
An electronic pedal means the DBW. Mechanical fuel control means System 80. See electronic versus mechanical speed limiters.
Sectors where it makes most sense
- Long-distance freight. Camiones on the routes out of Buenos Aires, Rosario and Córdoba to the ports, the north and Patagonia. Long hours, big fuel bills.
- Long-distance and urban buses. Micros de larga distancia and colectivos, where speed limits are written into the rules and passengers notice.
- Agriculture and grain. Heavy harvest traffic on rural roads.
- Mining and oil and gas. Haulage in mining and oil and gas regions, often under site speed rules. “Cuánto consume un camión por km” is one of the questions Argentine operators search for. It depends on load, route and speed, and speed is the part you control. Test your own numbers in the HGV fuel consumption calculator.
How supply and fitting work
We ship direct to your fleet with fitting instructions. Your own workshop team can fit the unit, or you can use a local auto-electrician or any workshop you trust. Our technical team supports you remotely through fitting, setup and calibration. A DBW takes about 1.5 hours, and System 80 or TrackSpeed about 60 minutes each. The installation guide shows the steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Resolución 19/2016 require?
It sets limited speeds for passenger and cargo vehicles: 100 km/h for long-distance and interurban M3 buses, 60 km/h for urban M3 buses, 100 km/h for M2 vehicles and 90 km/h for N2 and N3 trucks, each with a tolerance of plus or minus 3 percent. The limitation is done by reprogramming the on-board computer at manufacture or import.
What does Disposición 500-E/2017 add?
It sets the procedure and schedule for used N2 and N3 trucks, and it requires manufacturers to fit limiters on new N2 and N3 vehicles after 1 June 2017. Used units that do not comply will not pass the mandatory technical inspection (RTO).
Can a fleet with older camiones use AutoKontrol?
Yes, talk to us about your vehicles. Mechanical diesels suit System 80, and electronic-throttle trucks suit the DBW. Send the make, model, year and engine and we will confirm what fits.
Can our own workshop fit it?
Yes. We ship with fitting instructions, and your workshop or a local auto-electrician can fit it. We support remotely.
Does it help diesel consumption per km?
Speed has a strong effect on diesel use, and a limiter removes the highest-consumption running. The size of the gain depends on your load, route and current driving, so test your own figures in the fuel savings calculator.
