Limitador de Velocidad Chile: Speed Limiters for Trucks and Buses
Chile is long, narrow and steep, and almost everything moves by road. Copper and lithium come down from the Andes, fruit and wine go to the ports of San Antonio and Valparaíso, and freight runs the length of Ruta 5 from Arica to Puerto Montt. The device that caps a vehicle’s road speed is called a limitador de velocidad. In English it is a speed limiter or speed governor.
AutoKontrol makes them in the UK. We are part of Scorpion Group, which has built vehicle electronics since 1973, and our units are ECE R89 type-approved. We ship direct to Chilean fleets with fitting instructions, and the fleet fits the unit itself or uses a local workshop. This page covers the limits your camiones and buses run under, which limitador suits which vehicle, and where it pays back.
Speed limits for camiones and buses in Chile
Article 145 of the Ley de Tránsito sets the maximum speeds:
| Vehicle | Maximum speed |
|---|---|
| Buses and trucks of 3,860 kg GVW or more | 90 km/h |
| School transport | 90 km/h |
| Interurban buses | up to 100 km/h |
| Urban roads | 50 km/h |
| Cars, single carriageway | 100 km/h |
| Cars, two or more lanes | 120 km/h |
A limitador set at or below 90 km/h on a heavy truck means the vehicle cannot drift above the legal ceiling on a long downhill or an empty straight. Fleets that want a tighter policy than the legal ceiling can set the unit lower.
You can compare Chile with its neighbours in truck speed limits in Latin America by country.
Why Chilean fleets fit a limitador de velocidad
Diesel per kilometre. Distances are long and the climbs are serious. Speed has a strong effect on consumption, and a limiter takes the highest-consumption running off the table. Put your own numbers into the HGV fuel consumption calculator.
Mountain and coastal descents. Loaded camiones coming down from the Andes or along the coast need distance to stop. Capping speed gives the driver margin where it matters.
Insurance. A sealed limiter with tamper detection is something you can show an insurer.
Client and site rules. Mines, ports and large shippers set speed rules for the contractors who serve them. A sealed limiter, plus the speed record from TrackSpeed, lets you show you meet them.
Driver behaviour. The limit holds whatever the pedal does, so your speed policy no longer depends on who is driving that day.
Which limitador de velocidad fits your vehicles
| Your vehicle or need | Fits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Camión or bus with an electronic throttle | DBW speed limiter | Electronic, works on the drive-by-wire throttle signal. Fit about 1.5 hours. |
| Older diesel with mechanical fuel control | System 80 | Mechanical, works on the fuel line. Fit about 60 minutes. Accuracy +/-1-2 km/h. |
| Tracking plus a record of speed | TrackSpeed | Limiter with ScorpionTrack GNSS tracking. Fit about 60 minutes. |
| Lower speeds inside mine sites, ports, depots | GeoKontrol | GPS geofenced zone speed limits. |
| Vehicles using SENT throttle sensors | SENT speed limiter | Built for the SENT sensor protocol. |
The dividing line is how the engine controls fuel. An electronic pedal means the DBW. Mechanical fuel control means System 80, because an electronic limiter has nothing to connect to. Our article on electronic versus mechanical speed limiters goes through the choice.
Sectors where it makes most sense
- Mining (minería). Chile is one of the world’s largest copper producers, and camiones mineros and contractor fleets run long hauls between sites and ports. GeoKontrol suits the site side: a lower speed inside a defined zone, then released on the public road. For a comparable case, see our mining fleet case study from West Africa.
- Long-haul freight. Ruta 5 north to south, and the cross-Andes routes. The biggest fuel bills and the longest exposure.
- Forestry and agriculture. Timber and fruit trucks on mixed rural and highway routes, with harvest-season peaks.
- Intercity and school buses. Passenger safety on long runs and a visible control for operators.
- Port and distribution fleets. Many drivers, many routes, and a need for consistent behaviour.
How supply and fitting work
We ship direct to your fleet with fitting instructions. Your own workshop can fit the unit, or you can use a local auto-electrician or any workshop you trust. Our technical team supports you remotely through fitting, setup and calibration. A DBW takes about 1.5 hours and System 80 or TrackSpeed about 60 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What speed should a limitador de velocidad be set to in Chile?
At or below the limit for the vehicle. Under article 145 of the Ley de Tránsito, buses and trucks of 3,860 kg GVW or more may not exceed 90 km/h, and interurban buses may go to 100 km/h. Many fleets set a little lower for fuel and margin.
Can it be fitted to a camión minero?
If the truck has an electronic throttle, the DBW works on that signal. For mine sites, GeoKontrol applies a lower speed inside a defined GPS zone. Send us the make, model, year and engine and we will confirm the right unit.
Does it work on older diesel trucks?
Yes. System 80 is mechanical and works on the fuel line, so it suits older diesels with mechanical fuel control.
Can our own workshop fit it?
Yes. We ship with fitting instructions, and your workshop or a local auto-electrician can fit it. We support remotely.
Does it help diesel consumption per km?
Speed strongly affects diesel use, and a limiter removes the highest-consumption running. We quote no percentage because it depends on your load, route and current driving. Test your own figures in the fuel savings calculator.
